Toughened glass is made by heating flat glass to just below its softening temperature (650 °C) and suddenly chilling it with jets of cold air. This results in the outer skins being under powerful compressive stress while the interior maintains severe tensile stress. Consequently, impacts applied to the glass are overcome by the compressive stress on the surfaces to ensure maximum safety.
