A Technical Overview of Active & Passive Smart Glazing Mechanisms
Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) is the core mechanism of electrical switchable glass. Under no-voltage conditions, liquid crystal micro-droplets are randomly oriented, scattering light to render the glass opaque. When an electrical current (typically 48V/65V AC) is applied, the liquid crystal molecules align instantly, allowing light transmission and making the glass transparent.
Unlike PDLC which controls light scattering, Electrochromic glass uses transition metal oxides (primarily tungsten oxide, WO3) that react to low-voltage direct current (DC). This reaction alters the absorption characteristics of the glass, shifting it from clear to dark tint. It allows variable light transmission and solar heat control without losing outdoor views.
These passive smart glass systems respond directly to environmental stimuli—heat (thermochromic) or UV exposure (photochromic). PVB interlayers are embedded with active chemical structures that automatically increase opacity as surface temperature or solar exposure increases, stabilizing interior thermal loads.
